FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - Fort Benning is calling Army cavalry scouts to come compete next month to determine who's the best.
The Georgia Army post outside Columbus will host the inaugural Gainey Cup Competition March 1 through 5.
Competitors will be tested on their physical fitness as well as weapons firing skills, reconnaissance abilities and how well they can set up an observation post.
Teams from 14 Army posts across the U.S. are scheduled to compete. Each team will be made up of 5 soldiers who are trained as cavalry scouts.
The competition is named for retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. William "Joe" Gainey, the first senior enlisted soldier to be named adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Gainey served in the job from 2005 to 2008.
