COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

An accident at the Columbus Police Department's firing range sent a man to a hospital.

Officials say police were conducting firearms training around 8 a.m. Thursday when an officer discharged his weapon. A bullet struck a recruit in the forehead.

The victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance where he was treated and released. His injuries are not considered serious.

Police rifle training resumed following the incident that occurred earlier Thursday morning.

News Leader 9 was told the matter will be further evaluated by police.
