BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Crestworth Elementary, Crestworth Learning Academy and J.K. Haynes Elementary Charter School in Baton Rouge closed early Friday due to a strong chemical smell in the Scotlandville area.

A strong gas or chemical smell in the area has been around since Thursday, but residents say the smell seems to be getting stronger.  There is no word on what chemical is causing the smell or where it is from.

The Senior Citizens Center at Greater King David on Elmer Avenue was also evacuated.

DEQ is sending in large mobile monitoring equipment to check the Scotlandville neighborhood this weekend.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department said the choice to close the schools was made by school officials. Fire officials said at this time they see no reason to evacuate residents in the area.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
