Crime numbers down for Muscogee County in 2012

(WTVM) -

Crime numbers for Muscogee County have been released for 2012, and they are trending in the right direction.

Crime totals for last year are down 7 percent from 2011.

We spoke with Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson about the five murders already recorded in 2013.

She pointed out 2012 got off to a quick start with 8 murders in the first quarter. She says more patrol on the streets played a role in crime being lower.

The mayor says a local option sales tax helped generate more money for the city to hire additional officers.

In response to the first murder of the year at Club Majestic, Mayor Tomlinson says the ball is already rolling to have the place closed.
