Jaguars beat Valley to stay in first place

ITTA BENA, MS (WAFB) -

Derek Beltran led four Southern players in double figures and the Jaguars withstood a second half rally to beat Mississippi Valley State 78-74 Monday night in Itta Bena.

Beltran scored 19 points and Javan Mitchell added 18, but the Jaguars had to rely on free throws for nearly half of their scoring output. Jameel Grace added 14 and Brandon Moore had 12 for a total of 63 points among them, with 31 of those coming from the free throw line, in a game that featured 67 personal fouls and five players who fouled out.

Southern's scoring leader on the season Malcolm Miller was held to just nine points, fouling out after playing just 13 minutes. Mitchell and two other Jags also fouled out, while Davon Usher of MVSU scored 13 of his game-high 25 points on free throws.

Southern (17-8, 11-2) kept pace with Arkansas Pine Bluff (11-2) in the SWAC standings, after the Golden Lions defeated Alcorn State 80-52 on ESPNU.

Mississippi Valley State won the women's game over SU 61-57, as Sandy Pugh's Lady Jags (10-3) fell a game and a half behind Texas Southern (11-1), which edged Grambling Monday night 59-58.

Both teams return home to the FG Clark Saturday to host Alabama State, starting with the women's game at 2:00pm.
