MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

I think most of us take for granted that when we walk into a grocery store it will be fully stocked with fresh meat and produce, very rarely, if ever, thinking or appreciating the men and women who bring that livestock and harvest to bare – the Alabama farmer.

A study was released this week highlighting the more than $70 billion annual impact of Alabama's Agribusiness (agriculture and forestry), which by the way, accounts for 22 percent of our state's workforce.  Poultry and egg farming lead the way with traditional farm commodities at $15.1 billion in sales, employing some 86,237 Alabamians.

We wanted to highlight these astounding facts as a catalyst to encourage support for our farmers in every way possible. We put a lot of time, money and energy into expanding our Alabama base of industry with additional high profile automotive and aircraft companies, and rightfully so.

But, we should not lose sight of the economic engine that is driving our state, farming, and look at every turn to support them legislatively and economically whenever we can.

We, for one, would like to thank our Alabama farmers and let you know the next time we walk into that grocery store your efforts, long hours, sacrifices and impact on our state's economy will not have gone unnoticed.
