MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Most cruisers probably won't find themselves in circumstances like the ones felt by passengers aboard the Carnival Triumph--overflowing toilets, excessive seasickness, little food and no air conditioning.
"It's not something we see on a regular basis," says Clay Ingram with AAA Alabama.
But if the unexpected happens, and you're on the ship, travel agents have one word of advice.
"Vacation insurance."
WSFA 12 News spoke with local agents who say vacation insurance protects against the unforeseen.
"Especially for a bigger trip where you have a fair amount of money invested," adds Ingram.
The proper plan ensures the money you spend on a large trip isn't wasted if something goes wrong.
So how much does travel insurance cost for a seven day cruise, for instance?
Agents say insurance on a $2,000 dollar trip for a traveler between the ages of 35 and 59 could cost you roughly $100.
To some it's a small price to pay for some big peace of mind.
"By and large travel insurance is always a great idea," adds Ingram.
Travel agents say make sure you're booking a vacation with a reputable company and be aware of what you're paying for.
And when it comes to cruises, take note of the ships that may be older and could have complications.
Carnival Cruise Lines executives say they're sorry for the current conditions aboard the Triumph.
The company canceled 14 of the ship's future voyages.
