Carver High School celebrates Black History Month with music

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Students at Carver High School took a ride back in time Thursday.  In honor of Black History Month, the school chorus put on a show to remember.

From the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, to the King of Soul James Brown, more than 2,000 students from all over Muscogee County hitched a ride on "The Soul Train" all the way back in time to a place in music history known as Motown.

"Motown to Chris Brown is the name of the show. It features some of the artist of the past and present day who have had a great influence on music in America," said Warren Williams, Carver High School chorus and drama director.

Students transformed into famous music icons such as the Temptations, Chris Brown, and Tina Turner.

Junior Jacolby Harris says he wants the younger generations to know where current artist get their style.

"Everybody in the world knows who Chris Brown is but they don't know who James Brown is; that's why I jumped off the stage because I wanted to give people the idea of who James Brown really was. He was an entertainer," Harris said.

Williams said putting on that type of show was easy because Carver High is loaded with talented students.

"All the music is live music. The piano, keyboard, drums, everything was live," said Williams.

Even the singing, Luther Vandross was quite the treat for the ladies.

The children cheered, chanted, and chimed in on their favorite lyrics before heading back home. It was definitely a trip they would not forget.
