Change possibly coming for Autauga Co. schools calendar

AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) -

There could be a change in the works in the school calendar in Autauga County, and Andretta Albright hopes county school leaders make a change. That change will be discussed in the Autauga County School Board's work session Monday night. Albright is an instructional teacher for the system and a mom, too.

"We did go out of town for Christmas but it just seemed like it ended very quickly. We really didn't have time to relax," said Albright.

Prattville Jr., High School Athletics Director Donny Burnett doesn't like the current calendar either.

"I think I would prefer the longer day calendar if it meant getting our two weeks at Christmas back,' Burnett said.

One year ago the Alabama legislature passed a law that dictates when school systems can start and end their school year. The idea behind the law was to give families a longer summer break with the hope that would increase state tourism dollars.

Autauga County School Superintendent Spence Agee says he's heard a few complaints on the streets. Agee says they're looking at changing their current school calendar from shorter breaks to longer days in school. The longer days would mean classes would be begin 15 minutes early and end 15 minutes later than now. Right now the shorter break calendar means schools that normally get two weeks off for Christmas get a week and a half off, and only a three-day break during Thanksgiving instead of the entire week.

"We don't think a week and a half is enough time for the children and we're going to revisit the Thanksgiving break as well," said Agee.

Today, there is a bill in the legislature that would modify the current law; allow school districts to prove to the state superintendent why they could do better by creating their own school calendar.

There is also the possibility Agee and the county school board will just leave the current set up the way it is. If there is a new proposal, a vote on the matter could come in March.
