BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

LSU football legend Billy Cannon was hospitalized after suffering a stroke Tuesday.

His family said he is alert and resting.

LSU released a statement Tuesday afternoon indicating doctors will conduct tests to determine the extent of the stroke.

Cannon remained in ICU overnight. The family expressed its thanks for the prayers and concerns of friends and fans.

The 75-year-old Cannon was working at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, where he is director of the prison's dental program, when he suffered the stroke.

Cannon won the Heisman trophy in 1959. He is best remembered for his punt return against Ole Miss on Halloween night of 1959, leading the Tigers to a 7-3 victory against the Rebels.
