Colonels outslug Jaguars, 11-1

From Nicholls Athletics

THIBODAUX, La. – After scoring 15 runs on Sunday, the Nicholls State University offense didn't cool off in the two days between games as the Colonels scored 11 runs on 15 hits in defeating the Southern University Jaguars 11-1 Wednesday night in Thibodaux.

With the win the Colonels improve to 3-1 on the season, taking their last three straight, while the Jaguars fall to 2-2 on the season.

The Colonels opened their first game at home in grand fashion, as Matt Richard led off the contest with a solo home run over the right field fence as the Colonels scored four runs in the opening frame and would not look back as the team score two in the sixth and five in the eighth, while Southern got its lone run of the game in the fourth inning.

Southern had its chances to get some runs across the plate, but every time the Jaguars seemed to be finding a break, Nicholls pitching got out of the jam and got out of the inning unscathed. Starting pitcher Zach Thiac (1-0) earned the win and continued his string of solid play to open the season after giving up just two hits in three innings with five strikeouts. Three freshmen made up the first three pitchers of the game, as Justin Sinibaldi pitched the next two and Grant Borne for the inning after that, before veterans Jacob Rodrigue, Chris Miller and Kelby Langston closed the door on the Jaguars. The final five relievers combined to give up just one unearned run and three hits with eight strikeouts.

Ten Colonel players produced hits on the night, with four garnering two or more hits in the ballgame. Philip Lyons upped his season average to .412 on the night after going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, as his two run double in the eighth, his second double of the night, helped push the team over the top and into the double-digit run plateau. Richard's home run was the first of his career, as he finished the night going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Zachary LeBeouf had two hits with an RBI, while Ray Eureste finished 2-for-3 with his second triple in as many games scoring twice.

Camilo Godoy took the loss for Southern after giving up four runs, three earned in 4.2 innings of work although did finish with six strikeouts. The Jaguar defense did little to help the visitors early, as Southern had four errors while Nicholls had three. Cade Leblanc and John Pagan didn't fare any better, as the two gave up the final seven runs of the game in just 3.1 total innings, with five earned on nine hits.

The Colonels would go through the entire batting order in the first inning, as after Richard's solo shot, Mike Barba scored on a two-base error for Southern that put two runners at the corners with no outs. After a stolen base by Keith Cormier put him at second after the error, a single by LeBeouf scored Lyons which followed an error that scored Cormier to put Nicholls up 4-0.

The Nicholls bats went silent, and after Southern scored in the fourth, a bases loaded situation produced the first run for the Colonels since the first as Barba drove in Alex Tucker on an RBI groundout. After a walk re-loaded the bases, Eureste scored on a wild pitch for the last run of the inning to take a comfortable 6-1 lead with three left to play.

In the eighth the floodgates opened as the Eureste triple began the Nicholls offensive onslaught, with Eureste, Adam Seal, Lyons, Cody Tillotson and Tyler Duplantis each had a hit for Nicholls that produced a run in the inning, with five runs on five hits to put the game way for good. Langston closed out the final inning getting all three batters out in order.
