BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

State Public Defender Jean Faria was asked to take a different position within the Louisiana Public Defender Board.

The LPDB Board President Frank Neuner first reported to WAFB 9News that Faria resigned. Later in the day, Neuner corrected his statement saying "the Board recommended that Jean Faria take another position within the agency so that she may continue to offer her vision in reaching the mission of the agency and assist the Board with reassessment of long term strategic planning."

Julie Kilborn has been appointed Interim State Public Defender until further order of the Board.  According to Neuner, Kilborn has expressed that she does not want the position permanently.

Neuner also says Ms. Faria is developing a plan for implementation for legal representation for the indigent population of Louisiana, a process that began 50 years ago with the Gideon decision.

Faria was appointed June 1st, 2008. For the previous 11 years, Ms. Faria has served as the Assistant Federal Defender for the Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana, in Baton Rouge, LA. From 1995-1997 she was the Chief Executive Officer of the Louisiana Indigent Defender Board in New Orleans, LA. Prior to that, Ms. Faria worked as a public defender in the 19th JDC Public Defender Office in Baton Rouge.
