Animal rights activists protest alleged animal cruelty at Columbus Wal-Mart

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Local animal rights activists, along with the national nonprofit Mercy for Animals, held a protest outside Wal-Mart on Airport Thurway in Columbus on Thursday.

The demonstration featured a giant inflatable pig to call attention to Wal-Mart's pork supplier's alleged practice of confining pregnant pigs to small gestation crates for most of their lives.

The group says Wal-Mart has refused to follow the lead of retailers like Costco, Kroger, and Safeway, all of whom have agreed that gestation crates are inherently cruel.

In an email statement, Wal-Mart told News Leader 9 that this is a complicated issue and that they do not tolerate animal mistreatment.
