Arizona Senate chief says union bills are priority

Posted: Updated:

Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs says an effort to ban automatic deductions of union dues from public employees' paychecks is a priority for national and state Republicans.

Biggs told The Associated Press Monday that he backs the anti-union legislation that would impact police and firefighters.

At least three bills in the Arizona Senate seek to pass the ban.

The Republican-led Senate voted 17-12 against one of the measures last week, but Biggs says he wants the Senate to pass a ban this year.

House Speaker Andy Tobin has said he was waiting for the Senate to take action on the issue.

The Legislature passed a similar measure in 2011, but the bill exempted public safety workers from the prohibition. A federal court threw it out.
