CHARDON, OH (WOIO) -

It was one year ago that three students were killed, three others wounded, in a shooting at Chardon High School.

Wednesday Chardon school students made a symbolic and solemn walk to a ceremony in Chardon Square in remembrance of the victims.

17-year-old Russell King, Jr., 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor and 16-year-old Demetrius Hewlin were killed in the shooting. 17-year-old Nick Walczak remains paralyzed from the waist down. 18-year-old Joy Rickers and a 6th, unidentified victim were treated and released from the hospital.

Student gunman TJ Lane pleaded guilty to the deadly shooting, and will be sentenced in mid-March.

In the days following the shooting, cards, letters and donations poured into the school in an outpouring of support and compassion.

"I think our students truly felt appreciated," said Chardon High School Principal Andy Fetchik. "I think they felt supported from day one."

Bolstered by the show of support, when it was time to return to school, Chardon students came together and marched from the Town Square to the high school.

Now, Chardon students have decided it's time to say thank you.

"All the communities across the world have given us so much in the past year and we just want to take a little time to give back to those communities and show them how much their support has meant to us," said Senior Class Officer Adam Benjamin.

So Wednesday, privately, students will make blankets for other suffering communities. They will also create journals, three of them, for the families of students who were killed.

They want people to know they refuse to be consumed by bitterness. They are recovering, but they'll never forget.

"I think that's very personal, and I think each student has a relationship with their fallen classmates or their injured classmates that they're going to deal with on their own," Principal Fetchik added.

The schedule of events to remember the victims are listed below.

Wednesday, February 27:

"Day of Service" at Chardon High School

6:30 p.m. - Candle Light Vigil on Chardon Square, hosted by the City of Chardon

7 p.m. - The Chardon United Methodist Church praise band will perform "praise music and uplifting songs" in Park Auditorium.

7:30 p.m. - Chardon Youth Ministry Group Crave 631 - Release of Lanterns on High School grounds

Special Note: For those attending Wednesday's events on Chardon Square, parking is available at the Burr Funeral Home.

Burr Funeral Home is located at 116 South Street.
