WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

Thousands of Elmore County Public School students are about to enjoy a new ride next fall. The county ordered a fleet of new school buses.

Elmore County School bus drivers pulled out for the afternoon to pick up their kids. For many of these buses, their days are numbered. High mileage, wear and tear, and time is taking its toll on the old wheels. The new ones will be here by August.  There will be nine new buses, the largest order of new buses in recent memory for Elmore County Schools.

Robbie Slater tells us the new ones will have better vision for the drivers. Each bus costs around 78 thousand dollars. Slater says some of the buses they take out of the fleet will be sold while others will be used as spare buses.

County school leaders say they have around 150 buses, but 130 are used daily to pick up and drop off 7,000 children.
