BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
An environmental engineer says Alabama is among 7 states that are more prone to sinkholes.
Because of underground coal mines and the soil our state sits on, it makes it a perfect combination for the ground to cave in. In fact, Shelby County holds the record for the biggest sinkhole recorded in theU.S.
While you can't stop one from happening, there are a couple warning signs to look out for.
"In your yard, look for areas that start holding water, where the water doesn't drain away, depressions in your yard. Start looking for cracks in the walls that were never there before," said environmental engineer Chuck Burgin.
Burgin says even though the state is prone to sinkholes, people do not need to worry about every step they take.
