PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man who climbed over a fence and jumped from the Northern Avenue overpass on northbound Interstate 17 died at the hospital Sunday, according to a Phoenix Police Department spokesman.

Sgt. Steve Martos said the man died when he arrived at a hospital after jumping about 7:30 p.m.

The man was struck by at least one vehicle in the northbound lanes on I-17 by the time officers arrived, according to officials.

Northbound traffic was diverted from the freeway at Northern Avenue while the investigation was under way. The freeway was completely open later Sunday night.
