Under a new Obama administration rule, undocumented immigrants can now take their driver's license test in Alabama. Starting Friday, state officials will honor certifications granted under the Deferred Action Childhood Arrival program.
To be eligible for the DACA certificate, immigrants must meet several requirements. They have to have come to the US before their 16thbirthday and have lived here for at least 5 years. They also must be in school, have graduated, or a member of the military. They cannot have any felonies on their record either.
Ediomir Cambron is one of the immigrants taking the test. He is now 21-years-old, but came to America from Mexico when he was 15. He is currently a student at Calhoun Community College in Huntsville.
Cambron said having a license would make getting to class easier, "Not having a license, I mean, I can't do a lot of stuff without it. So now I'm pretty excited because I will be able to do things I used to not be able to do."
This was not Cambron's first visit to the DMV. He went there twice before, but was turned away each time because the state was not yet honoring the DACA certificates.
The DACA certificate is only good for 2 years. Cambron said he has already applied for permanent U.S. residency, but that process can take 10-12 years.
