MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A Discount Cab driver was killed when the minivan he was driving struck a light pole in Mesa on Monday morning.

The cab was carrying a 27-year-old man when it abruptly swerved to the median and into the pole, said Diana William of the Mesa Police Department. The passenger was not hurt, she said.

Fire officials unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the 54-year-old driver, and preliminary reports indicated the driver had a possible medical condition, Williams said.

The crash happened about 8 a.m. near Power and Hampton roads in Mesa.

No other information was immediately available.
