AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
Safe travels are the focus of the City of Auburn's 2013 Travel with Care campaign that kicked off Monday.
"We're working to reduce traffic accidents whether they are vehicular or pedestrian related. What we are trying to do is save lives and save injuries," explains City of Auburn's Traffic Engineer, Brandy Ezelle.
For eight years, the City of Auburn, Auburn University and the Lee County Sheriff's Office has educated residents about safety on the road and courtesy between all modes of transportation including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
"Statistics show it makes a difference because accidents are down and certainly accidents involving pedestrians are down. So fewer injuries and certainly any serious injuries or fatalities are the ultimate goal," says Mayor Bill Ham.
Every day this week, promotional items, many of which increase commuter visibility, with be given away at various spots around the city.
"All week we're going to be working to get information out to the citizens at students and we're going to have event stations set up everyday across campus and around the city. We're giving away free reflective T-shirts, free bike lights, we're even installing the bike lights," explains Ezelle.
Throughout Travel with Care week, traffic laws and safety guidelines will be reinforced through public service announcements.
"Without question, people are more distracted now more than ever with all the different devices, so being aware of your surroundings, and those around you, is vitally important."
