Board member responds to charges of overpaid legal fees

There were new developments Monday night after the first school board meeting since the GBI was brought in to question several board members regarding alleged threats over legal fees.

School board member Naomi Buckner responded to a statement Columbus attorney Frank Myers made during the public agenda at last week's school board work session when  Myers addressed the board about high legal fees for the school system.

In that statement last week, Myers also said that spending over a half a million dollars in legal fees is why students don't have resources in the classroom like books. He also used a student per hour ratio when calculating his numbers.

At Monday night's meeting, board member Naomi Buckner charged back by reading a statement, refuting years claim about books at area schools and also brought up that his numerical analysis of these lawyer fees was not logical.

Buckner says that she received a text message from Myers about Wesley Heights school being without books. She says after a survey with all the principals in the district, none say that they are in need of books.

Frank Myers who was at the meeting Monday night for a brief period, told News Leader 9 that he was surprised that Buckner even made a statement about legal fees. Myers challenged the board to come up with a better method of calculating legal fees in the district.
