(RNN) – The Miami Hurricanes' Shane Larkin is a sports legacy. His father, Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, helped the Cincinnati Reds win the 1990 MLB World Series.
Now the son has an opportunity to place his own championship trophy beside his dad's on the mantle.
"Sugar Shane" - a nickname bestowed upon him by dad's teammate, Deion Sanders - led the 2012-2013 ‘Canes to the school's first ACC regular season and tournament championships.
With four seniors by his side in the starting lineup, the 5'11" sophomore emerged as a leader on the court for coach Jim Larranaga.
He finished the regular season averaging 14.6 points, 4.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds and two steals per game, and he earned a spot on the All-ACC first team. The point guard's skill set enables him to keep the rest of the team involved during a game then take over scoring when the situation calls for it.
He and backcourt partner Durand Scott form one of the best defensive duos in the tournament. Opponents will need to take extra care of the ball at all times to ensure Miami does not gain a quick advantage in scoring and momentum.
