FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The command and general staff officer course at WHINSEC conducted a major operational exercise at Fort Benning on Tuesday.

It's a part of their Advanced Operations course, and students are taking everything they have learned all year and applying it to the exercise.

They will be utilizing software and systems the Army actually uses so commanders can get an idea of what it would be like in the field.

We spoke with Major Tony Jasso who explains why exercises like these are so important.

"Oh it's really important because - especially for some majors like me that have not worked at the operational and strategic level - it definitely is an opportunity to make mistakes here at the school house before you go out in to the real world and have to do this for real," said Major Jasso.

More than 40 field grade officers from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces are participating in the exercise.

Students from ten different countries and instructors from seventeen partner nations are also in attendance.
