A former employee of the Glendale Elementary School District has been indicted on fraud-related charges.
Deborah Lynn Santa Cruz, 53, of Sedona, was executive secretary to the superintendent of the Glendale Elementary School District for several years. She retired in June 2008.
The indictment alleges Santa Cruz diverted $14,680 in public school funds between Jan. 1, 2004 and May 31, 2008 to an unauthorized personal bank account that she opened.
She is also charged with four counts of misusing of public monies. One of the counts relates to the theft and two relate to the use of GESD funds for unauthorized purposes. The fourth count relates to the purchase of 715 books purchased with GESD funds but never received by the district.
She also faces four additional charges for forgery. The indictment alleges Santa Cruz made false entries in various logs and purchasing documents related to some of her unauthorized purchases.
"It is very disturbing to think that taxpayer dollars intended for the educational needs of young students may have been misused, and my office will vigorously prosecute this matter," said Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne.
