FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

A theft suspect was arrested early Thursday morning after fleeing law enforcement authorities in several northern Arizona jurisdictions.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers took Nicholas Wayne Gunter, 28, of Prescott Valley, into custody a short time after stop sticks disabled his car.

A Sedona police officer notified the Coconino County Sheriff's Office and said he was pursuing a vehicle northbound on Highway 89A from Sedona. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle because it resembled one in a Sedona theft case.

The Sedona officer discontinued his pursuit after the vehicle left city limits and entered into Oak Creek Canyon.

Coconino County sheriff's deputies positioned themselves along Highway 89A between Oak Creek Canyon and Flagstaff after the vehicle was spotted at the top of the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks.

The driver refused to stop. Stop sticks were placed in its path at Highway 89A and Old Munds Highway, south of Flagstaff city limits. The vehicle struck the tire deflation devices deflating three of the four tires, deputies said.

The vehicle eventually stopped on J.W. Powell Boulevard and Interstate-17, where the driver left the vehicle and fled on foot toward the interstate.

DPS located the suspect walking along I-17 near J.W. Powell Boulevard and arrested him without further incident. Flagstaff police officers were also present and assisted with this arrest.

Coconino sheriff's deputies booked him on charges of aggravated DUI, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of stolen property. Sedona police intend to charge him with theft, unlawful flight from law enforcement and endangerment, all of which are crimes that occurred in their jurisdiction.

People with any information about the investigation are asked to call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523 or Sedona Police Department at 928-282-3100.
