PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Supporters of gay marriage rallied in front of the Arizona State Capitol building Saturday afternoon ahead of potential landmark cases scheduled to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Justices will hear arguments in two separate cases related to gay rights. The first involves a California constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage. Wednesday, the Court will hear a case about gay partners receiving federal benefits.

"It's time. It's time for this to happen," said Mark Chatow, who joined supporters in downtown Phoenix. "The United States is just so uptight, and it's just so overdue here. I thought this was the country of liberty and freedom and justice for all."

"This is one of the largest LGBT communities in the country, so we wanted to bring everyone together," co-organizer Molly Gum said. Gum says the Phoenix area has the fifth-largest LGBT community in the country.

"We actually just got engaged last week, so we're really interested in seeing what happens at a federal level," said Cody Burns, who also joined the rally with her partner Sara.

"I'm pretty optimistic. We just want the same rights for everyone and equality for all," Burns said.
