The Louisiana House Ways and Means Committee is one of the first bodies that will hear details about the proposed tax shift initiative slated for the upcoming legislative session.

Members received three draft versions of a plan endorsed by Gov. Bobby Jindal to do away with the state's personal and corporate income taxes. The plan calls for an increase in sales taxes and the addition of other service taxes to make up the difference.

Louisiana Department of Revenue officials discussed Tuesday morning, among other advantages, the attraction of no personal income taxes.

"If you're trying to recruit an individual per se...and you're competing against Texas, where they are not subject to income tax, and Louisiana, you are at somewhat of a disadvantage and we hope to narrow that gap," said Jason Decuir with LDR.

The plan also includes the Louisiana Family Assistance Rebate Program that reportedly will compensate people who make less than $15,000 a year. This plan rebates those families the additional sales taxes they will pay with the new plan.
