BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

This week the U.S. Supreme Court justices in Washington started hearings that, in effect, would rule on the legality of same sex marriages. Some Baton Rouge residents tell 9News what they believe should happen.

Right now, in all but 9 states and the District of Columbia, a marriage is legally defined as being between one man and one woman. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will revisit the Defense of Marriage Act.

"If there's a positive outcome in the Supreme Court rulings, I think people down here might see that same-sex marriage is not as bad as I thought it was," said Kevin Serrin who is in favor of same-sex marriage.

Serrin and his partner have been in a committed relationship for 15 years. While he doesn't expect immediate change, Serrin says the fact the Supreme Court is even talking about change is a step in the right direction.

"What I'm hoping happens is, at some point down the road, if I were able to get married in a state that does recognize same-sex marriage, that the federal government would recognize that regardless of where I live," said Serrin.

The Louisiana Family Forum helped craft the definition of marriage in Louisiana.

"Marriage in Louisiana is defined as being between one man and one woman," said Gene Mills, the group's president.

Mills worries overturning the Defense of Marriage Act could cause both legal and moral issues for religious leaders.

"I can't affirm or as a pastor, conduct a wedding ceremony for a 'same-sex' union or couple, then do they face discrimination charges? And that may largely be determined by how this court rules," said Mills.

The Supreme Court is not expected to rule on the issue until later this summer.
