PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A New York man has been sentenced to life in prison in the 2009 stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend in Arizona.

On Wednesday morning, Dzevad Selimovic, 43, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and the judge handed down a life sentence, according to court officials.

Police said Selimovic and the victim, Emina Redza, dated for a couple months when they both lived in New York and then Redza moved to Arizona in August of 2009 after she broke up with him.

The suspect flew to visit Redza in September of 2009 and that's when he bought a six-inch tire repair screw driver at a gas station with the intent to kill Redza or himself, according to police.

Police said the victim had stab wounds to her upper back, face, throat and hands when her sister found her at their home on 19th Avenue in Phoenix on Sept. 10, 2009.

Selimovic took off in the victim's car and was located by police. He told the officer that he had stabbed his girlfriend.

He has been in Maricopa County Jail since his arrest.
