Kuhlenberg tosses 1-hit shutout in win over Tuskegee

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Columbus State pounded out 17 hits on its way to scoring 12 runs and got another stellar pitching performance by Matthew Kuhlenberg as the Cougars defeated Tuskegee 12-0 on Wednesday evening. It was the first game of a midweek doubleheader played at Ragsdale Field.

Kuhlenberg pitched a one-hit gem allowing the lone single in the seventh and final inning. He struck out a career high six batters while walking three.

It was also the first shutout of the year thrown by the Cougar pitching staff.

The freshman southpaw got more than enough support as the Cougars struck for four runs in the first two innings. Ryan Lewis led the bottom of the first off with a single to left-centerfield and then stole second. After a bunt single by J.D. Pullen, Cameron Scott lifted a sacrifice fly to the outfield that brought home Lewis.

In the second, CSU (13-15) struck for three runs thanks to a two-out rally. Blake Edwards started the rally off with a bunt single and two straight walks followed helping to extend the inning and loading the bases. Pullen delivered with a single up the middle that drove in one. Pullen's run scoring hit was followed by a Scott base knock into leftfield that drove in a pair pushing the score to 4-0.

Columbus State put the game away in the fifth scoring five runs on six hits. Seth Corbitt tripled with one-out and was driven home by Dustin Averett for the first run of the frame. A single and a hit batter loaded the bases once again for Pullen who singled in another run with a base hit through the right side of the infield.

Scott drove in another pair of runs later in the inning and Brett Teschner followed with a single to leftfield driving in his first run of the game and the fifth of the inning for the Cougars.

Columbus State capped off the scoring with three in the sixth. Corbitt walked to lead off the inning and Averett's second hit of the contest moved pinch runner Jackson Oliver to second. The hot bats continued as Lewis recorded a single scoring Oliver and after a walk to Pullen, Scott capped off his great day driving in his sixth run of the contest to make it 11-0. Teschner put the final touches on the game with a opposite field single driving in Lewis.

Six out of the nine CSU hitters recorded at least two hits led by Cameron Scott's perfect 4-for-4 performance. He drove in six runs increasing his season total to 44. Blake Edwards and J.D. Pullen were 3-for-4 while Ryan Lewis went 2-for-3 with a RBI and four runs scored.

Brett Teschner finished the day 2-for-5, pushing his hitting streak to 14 games.

Darrion Stubbs was hit with the loss for Tuskegee, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits. Cameron Summers recorded the lone hit for the Tigers.
