(WTVM) - A city commissioner in Brunswick, Georgia has been arrested and charged in connection with the investigation into the shooting death of a 13-month-old baby.
Police charged James Brooks with obstructing the investigation and influencing a witness.
According to his Brooks' lawyer Alan Tucker, Brooks says he was duped by the family of one of the murder suspects.
"Mr. Brooks went to the aid of constituents and, unfortunately, found out later that what they had been telling him and other members of the community wasn't true," said Tucker. "It wasn't his intent to interfere with the investigation. What he was trying to do at the point and time he was approached at the courthouse was just tell these folks, 'You have the right to remain silent, don't talk to police unless you have an attorney present.' And I think that was the crux of what caused the problem."
The sheriff's office says Brooks is being held in jail pending a court appearance.
