SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -

Get ready for an active mosquito season in Maricopa County.

Just last week, the Environmental Services Department reported the county's first mosquito sample to test positive for the West Nile Virus in 2013.

People who live in the Coyote Lakes area of Surprise tell CBS5 News the bugs are already a big problem.

"I try and spend more time outside, while it's cooled off and not too hot," said resident Ashley Blondin.

The problem is that's when mosquitoes are most active.

"I've seen a lot more than I've usually seen out here," Blondin said.

Many of her neighbors also complain about the growing number of mosquitoes and mosquito bites.

"Now that temperatures are increasing, it's warmer out there," said Johnny Dilone, spokesman for Maricopa County's Environmental Services Department. "The environment has been pretty good for mosquitoes to breed."

He said Maricopa County's mosquito season usually doesn't start until May - sometimes April.

"This year is one of those years when March has been a month of a lot of activity," Dilone said.

And, he points out, this is just a preview of what's to come.

"Indication is, due to weather conditions and looking at the traps we've collected so far - we're going to have a busy season," Dilone said.

To keep mosquitoes at bay and "Fight the Bite," the Environmental Services Department advises people to eliminate standing water from around their homes and avoid the outdoors at dawn and dusk - unless you're wearing insect repellant.

One Coyote Lakes resident, who emailed CBS 5's Action Button account, said she filed a complaint with the county Monday morning - to have them come out and investigate.

That's exactly what Environmental Services Department encourages you to do.

Maricopa County residents can call the West Nile General Information Help Line at 602-506-0700.

You can also file a complaint online.
