Senate passes bill raising militia age

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

People above the age of 45 will be able to volunteer for the state militia if a bill passed by the Arizona Senate becomes law.

The militia, though, has never been activated in the 101 years since Arizona became a state. That makes it unlikely that the older citizens affected by Republican Rep. Carl Seel's bill will ever be called up.

The militia provision is included in the state Constitution adopted in 1910 and ratified by the state's voters the following year. The measure names all able-bodied citizens ages 18 to 45 as members, with a few exemptions.

The Senate passed the bill Monday on a 16-9 party-line vote. A minor change means it returns to the House, where it previously passed on a 36-21 vote.
