2 men charged in Thorsby kidnapping, robbery

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested two Moulton men in connection to an Easter Sunday kidnapping and robbery in Thorsby.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell says that the men were arrested by ABI agents, who are working with Thorsby Police to investigate the case.

The ABI confirms that Panagiotis Jerome Theodory, 32, and Scotty Ray Smith, 33, were charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and one county of first-degree kidnapping each in the case.

Police say it all began when Theodory and Smith tried to rob a 94-year-old man and his caretakers walked in on the crime.

Officials say around 9 a.m. Easter Sunday, the two men, armed with weapons, approached Charles Dunlap's home on 3rd Street in Thorsby. Police said there was no sign of forced entry, so they believe somehow the men convinced Dunlap to let them inside.

The suspects tied Dunlap up and began to rob him. At some point, Timothy and Donna Henderson, a husband and wife who have cared for the elderly man for years, came by the house to check on him as normal. They walked in on the robbery and one suspect ended up driving Mrs. Henderson back to her home a couple miles away on Jones Street.

Thorsby Police Chief Rodney Barnett would not say what happened at that home, but he said Mrs. Henderson was eventually released unharmed, as was her husband and Mr. Dunlap who had a few cuts on his wrists.

At this time, police are not saying if the suspects and victims knew each other, what the motive was, or if anything was stolen.

The men have been transported to the Chilton County Jail. The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office assisted in locating the men.
