Man survives 140 ft. fall from cell tower

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says a man is alive after plummeting 140 feet from a cell tower.

The accident happened around 11 a.m. on Bonnie Avenue in the Minor community.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian says a rope caught the man 10 feet from the ground.  His hand was severely damaged in the fall when it got caught in the rope. The man is expected to survive.

The Minor Police Department responded to the scene and found the man on the ground. They say he was on top of the tower working and accidentally slipped and fell. Ge was able to catch himself on a rope just 10 feet above the ground.

The fire department's chaplain says it is amazing that he survived a fall like this with so few injuries.

"I've seen people fall off other high structures and this is a few. I've seen other cases where people survive, but this is the one I can say he received less injuries than any I've ever seen. So, really a miracle," said Christopher Colvin.

Colvin says they do not know if the rope the man caught himself on was a safety harness or mechanism. The incident is still under investigation.
