Mal Moore's life celebrated in Tuscaloosa

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A public memorial service took place on Thursday for former Crimson Tide Athletics Director Mal Moore. Moore passed away Saturday morning at the age of 73.

Hundreds of football players, gymnasts, basketball players and others filled the floor of Coleman Coliseum for a ceremony Thursday afternoon to celebrate the life of Moore.

Old-time country and western music played over the Coliseum speakers as the crowd gathered.

Moore has been associated with the University of Alabama for 55 years; many consider him a legend at the Capstone.

Moore died Saturday at Duke University Medical Center. He had been hospitalized since early March for treatment of pulmonary problems.

Moore was Alabama's "Director of Athletics" from 1999 up until last month. He was a part of ten national football championships as a player, coach and administrator. His hiring of Nick Saban in 2007 brought the university to three national football championships in the last four years.

Today, Crimson Tide fans are still grateful for numerous facility upgrades under Moore's leadership. Over $200 million has been spent upgrading Bryant Denny Stadium, not to mention the construction of new soccer, softball and tennis facilities.

Mal Moore's mark on his beloved university will be etched into the fabric of Alabama football for decades to come.

"He was a well respected man who did a lot of great things for the university. He flew our colors proud and God rest his soul," said Jon Vice, an Alabama alumni.
