The Alabama Department of Corrections is confirming that some personnel at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka are receiving a pay raise. The increase became effective on April 1.

Brian Corbett, a spokesman for the ADOC, says a pay differential was implemented for security personnel at Tutwiler at the Department's request.

The five percent raises were approved on March 20 by the State Personnel Board and given the go-ahead by Governor Robert Bentley on March 21.

Corbett said the request was made in order to recruit and retain qualified security staff at the women's prison, especially among female security staff. Tutwiler Prison is a maximum security prison that houses the state's female death row.

Those receiving the raises are under 8 job classifications:

  • Correctional Officer Trainee
  • Correctional Officer
  • Correctional Sergeant
  • Correctional Lieutenant
  • Correctional Captain
  • Correctional Warden I
  • Correctional Warden II
  • Correctional Warden III
Several concerned people contacted WSFA 12 News over the last few days trying to determine if rumors were true that Tutwiler personnel were getting raises in light of the ongoing investigation into allegations of "frequent and severe" officer-on-inmate sexual violence.

There were also complaints that if the rumors were true, Tutwiler personnel would be the only ADOC employees getting raises.

Corbett said pay differentials are not unprecedented, pointing to a five percent increase for security personnel at Donaldson Correctional Facility where he says similar issues of staff recruitment and retention led to the need for pay increases.

Those raises are not of the current year, however. They were implemented during Commissioner Donal Campbell's tenure.
