Columbus joy-rider out of jail on bond

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Brent Helms, 27, was granted bond in a Columbus courtroom Monday morning.

Helms faces nearly two dozen charges, including reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Officers say Helms was driving his pick-up truck under the influence when he hit parked cars and telephone poles, forcing others to swerve off of the road. The ordeal on Saturday afternoon led to a 30-minute police chase that began in the lake bottom area.

Helms' now-ex-girlfriend Caitlin Macheski, and friend Megan Moyer, were in the truck with him at the time. Both jumped out of the vehicle.

"I'm kind of used to it," Macheski said. "I mean, there's been other instances in the past where he's done crazy things, so it wasn't a total shock."

Macheski has severe abrasions to her right foot from the incident, and Moyer has a broken wrist.
