COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus official confirmed the man accused of shooting at police on a busy highway in Columbus is the son of a Muscogee County Corrections Officer that's assigned to the sheriff's office and works at the jail.

Traffic on I-185 came to a screeching halt Monday afternoon when Columbus Police Officers responded to a call and were greeted by gunfire.

Authorities reported around 1:30 p.m. Columbus dispatch received a call from a passerby who claimed they heard gunfire coming from a truck parked on the shoulder of the interstate.

The witness told police they noticed the utility truck has a shattered passenger side window but could not tell if anyone was inside the truck.

The person inside the silver Jeep heading northbound was later identified as 21-year-old Timothy Delbridge Jr. of Columbus.

"Upon arrival, Columbus Police Officers confronted an armed suspect who then pointed a weapon at an officer," Lt. Ross reported.

Authorities report Delbridge fired at the officers several times. According to a police report released Tuesday, officer Edwin Wilkins returned fire, striking Delbridge. Delbridge was transported to the Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds; neither officer was injured.

A warrant has been issued for Delbridge's arrest. He's charged with aggravated assault against a police officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and reckless conduct.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was also on the scene to investigate the incident. Agent Wayne Smith, with the GBI, said in an email statement that they do not have any updates about the investigation at this time.

Friday morning, Delbridge Jr. was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and was listed in satisfactory condition at the Medical Center in Columbus.

Both officers Wilkins and Foster have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

We'll continue to update this story as more details become available.
