TUCSON (CNN) -

Former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was nearly killed more than two years ago by a man with a gun.

Today, brain injuries make speaking difficult, and yet she has become an active spokeswoman for new restrictions on guns.

Ironically she has not lost her love of guns.

In fact, target practice is still a form of entertainment at Giffords' mother's house deep in the Arizona desert, as CNN's Dana Bash recently learned.

"Watch this - he's aiming for my pot," Giffords' mother, Gloria Giffords, said as her son-in-law Mark Kelly took aim at clay pots and water bottles at targets as mother and daughter watched from the patio, her mother cheering him on.

"Excellent," Gabby Giffords said after Kelly found his target.

"Excellent," echoed her mother, Gloria Giffords so Kelly could hear.

And Kelly wasn't shooting with just any kind of gun.

"This is the same kind of gun Gabby was shot with - a Glock. A 9mm Glock, but in that case it had a magazine that held 33 rounds. This, when it's full, holds 17. He (Jared Loughner) shot 33 rounds. Every round hit somebody, we think."

Kelly said he gave his wife the Glock as a gift several years ago.

"She's a gun owner," he said. "She's from the West."

Still, Bash said she had a question a lot of incredulous people watching Kelly shoot would ask.

"Really? This guy sort of still has … gets his kicks, or recreation for him is shooting a gun after his wife was shot through the head?" Bash asked.

"Gabby used to like shooting a gun, too," Kelly said. "Occasionally."

A fact Gabby Giffords acknowledged.

"Yes," she said.

Gabby Giffords and Kelly argue that because of their love of guns, they have more credibility in their fight to expand background checks to private gun sales.
