Darton golf team wins 12th straight region title

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Word around the region was that this was the year to knock off the Darton golf team in the Region XVII tournament and stop the Cavs from winning its 12 straight region title. But Darton had the lead as the final round teed off and never looked back.

Darton did indeed win its 12th consecutive Region XVII Golf Championship by 38 strokes at the Golf Club of South Georgia in Tifton.

Parks Brown, a freshman from Gainesville, shot an even par today to grasp his first collegiate tournament victory and the Region XVII Individual Champion title.  Brown finished 4-over the first day but finished rounds two and three even.

His score combined with those of teammates Madison Turner, Nick Green and Tae Kim (72, 73, 75, respectively) gave Darton a total of 292 strokes. The Cavs struggled the first day, shooting 305, but played solid afterward and finished with a 3-round total of 892. They were 38 strokes better than runners-up ABAC, who hosted the tournament.

The win left Jones with his second consecutive Region 17 Golf Coach of the Year award. Brown, Green and Tuner earned All Region 17 honors.

"We heard the rumors that you know this might be the year so that definitely motivated us a little bit and made us a little more focused and we needed to get a tournament win and everybody played solid. It's definitely good to get another win," said Brown.

Coach Jones said "Regardless of what players we've got and regardless of how we're playing going into it. Each year it gets harder. That's just the way streaks work. They always end somewhere and them to step up after that first day and put two really good solid rounds together. If they are going to play like this every round we can win anything."

The Cavaliers will play in the NJCAA District 4 Championship in Pendleton, S.C., April 15-16. The top seven teams will qualify for the NJCAA Championship in Lubbock, Tex.
