Atlanta runner survives second explosion at Boston Marathon

Jerry Dubner, of Atlanta, was in the final stretch of the Boston Marathon when the bombs exploded.

Despite being next to one of the explosions, Dubner was not injured. He spoke to CBS Atlanta's Katie Brace by phone.

Dubner said he was closing in on the finish line when he saw the first explosion ahead. He said about 10 seconds later, the second bomb exploded next to him.

"I was a little off to the right-hand side of the road, fortunately. If I had been on the left-hand side of the road, I'd be in the hospital right now. I saw people lying on the ground and blood. The last thing they needed was someone to go over and gawk, and so I just got out of there as quickly as I could," said Dubner. "The race officials were telling us to hurry down the course and I did exactly as I was told."

It was Dubner's 21st consecutive Boston Marathon. He said usually it's a celebration of accomplishment for all the runners.

"To have something like this happen, especially so close to the finish line, is shocking," said Dubner.

He said as he's learned more about Monday's events, this year's race brings very different emotions.

"It was scary, it was. I consider myself fortunate that I wasn't injured, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the people and their friends and family," said Dubner.

Dubner said he got his stuff and went directly to his hotel room. He said a lot of people are on edge. Dubner flies back to Atlanta on Tuesday.
