April 16 named as Jubilee Day in Columbus

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Dozens of city officials and community members came out to the Columbus Black History Museum and Archives Tuesday in honor of Jubilee or Freedom Day.

On this date in 1865, Columbus - a confederate territory -  was seized by the Union army and all slaves in the territory were freed.

In celebration of this anniversary--the Columbus Black History Museum and Archives hosted a feast.

We spoke with the chairman of the Jubilee Committee who explains why it is so important to observe this day.

At the event, Columbus Mayor Theresa Thomlinson and city council representative Pops Barnes re-read and presented the proclamation given prior to the day's celebration--officially making April 16 Jubilee Day in Columbus.
