BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The bombing at the Boston Marathon has put Alabama officials on alert.

"We stay on alert because of things like this," Gov. Robert Bentley said.

Federal, state and city flags are at half staff Tuesday in recognition of those killed and injured Monday. Gov. Bentley said the state would remain on alert just in case.

"This is a dangerous time and when thing like this happen, in any gathering where there is a soft target like it was up there we have to be vigilant," Bentley said.

Bentley said the state of Alabama has offered any assistance to Boston that may be needed to help with the investigation. After the attack Mayor William Bell put the city alert Monday.

"We swept most of the major buildings in the downtown area as well as the airport and as well as public facilities. We are mindful such a tragedy could happen anywhere, therefore we are on full alert," Bell said.

Bell said the city of Birmingham will be holding several events during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement as well as the city's Mercedes Marathon next year.

"We are not going to change anything but we are going to be more vigilant as well as step up our security measures," Bell said.

Former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones prosecuted the church bombers of the 16th Street Baptist Church and he took part in the investigation of the bombing of the New Woman All Women Clinic. Jones believed the Boston attack looked like domestic terrorism.

"It was Boston. The heart of America. It was Patriot's Day. It was tax day. It seemed all for government extremists who came out days like today," Jones said. J

ones believes those involved in the attack will be caught by federal authorities.
