COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A three vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of 13th Street and Veterans Parkway just before noon Wednesday.

Witnesses said a blue pick-up truck with three passengers ran a red light crossing Veterans Parkway. Two other cars were involved and have been towed.

"They had to completely cut the whole top off just to get the driver out. He was wrapped up in there like a puzzle. The blue truck was coming from 13th Street toward Phenix City and he ran the red light and hit the red car. When he bounced off of that, he hit the maroon car coming down Veterans Parkway towards Victory Drive, and flipped completely head over heels," said Michael Tillis.

Tillis works at the Chevron gas station across from the accident scene and said he rushed to help the victims after he heard the crash.  He said at least twenty other people including several men in uniform helped to stabilize the pick-up truck until the ambulance arrived.  Tillis described the cab of the truck as "close to crushing one man's head."

All three people in the pick-up that landed on its side appeared to be in critical condition when they were taken to hospitals.  Passengers from the other cars involved in the accident had less severe injuries, according to the witness.

At the same time that police were investigating the crash, a man was arrested less than 100 feet away for an apparently unrelated incident.  Witnesses said a man was either driving past the accident scene or pulled over nearby and police stopped him in the parking lot of Midas Muffler for possible DUI.

Investigators are still compiling the report and have yet to release the official details regarding the accident.
