TUPELO, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The suspect accused of mailing threatening letters to President Barack Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker has been charged with multiple federal offenses.

Paul Kevin Curtis of Corinth, was charged with two federal counts of threatening, according to a news release from the Department of Justice. He is expected to appear in federal court on Thursday. If convicted, Curtis could face up to 15 years in prison.

Curtis, who was arrested at his Corinth home Wednesday evening, is accused of sending letters to President Obama and Senator Roger Wicker that field tested positive for the poison ricin. A similar letter was also sent to Lee County Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland.

Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance Gainer said Thursday ricin was unequivocally the substance on the letter addressed to Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi.

The FBI said the results of field tests on the letter to the president indicated the presence of ricin, but it had not revealed the results of lab tests as of Thursday afternoon.

Ricin is a poison that is present in castor beans, according the New York State Department of Health. It is part of the waste that is produced during the production of castor oil and as such, is one of the most easily produced plant toxins.

The chemical is extremely deadly, and an amount as small as a pinhead, about 500 micrograms, can be enough to kill.

Curtis is being held in the Lafayette County Jail in Oxford.
