MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

In Marshall County where there are many chicken plants, chemicals used there bring about certain concerns.

Emergency Management Agency officials feel it doesn't always have to explode to be dangerous.

Plants can have industrial chemicals that can be very dangerous, but EMA Director Anita McBurnett said people should stay aware because dangerous chemicals are really everywhere.

It was July 2011 when some 20 people were evacuated from the Americold Logistics Plant in Albertville after an ammonia line ruptured.

EMA officials say the danger of ammonia is that a person can inhale it, making their mucus membranes burn and causing a fluid buildup in the lungs that can drown a person.

However, trucks carry hazardous chemicals on the roadways, barges on the waterways. Chlorine tanks at your local pool cause a significant danger, and even chemicals in your home can cause dangerous violent reactions: like chlorine bleach and ammonia, which should never be mixed or even stored together.

But when it comes to business and industry, McBurnett said they are required by law to report such dangerous chemicals to the state.

That helps first responders know what they're dealing with when they arrive to give the appropriate treatment.
