PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix firefighters said a 10-year-old child playing with matches started a house fire in which a man was found dead in a back room Sunday night.

Firefighters said the man, who was not identified, suffered burns and smoke inhalation in the house near 35th Avenue and McDowell Road.

Six adults, including the man who was in his late 40s or early 50s, and five children lived in the home where multiple rooms had been added. The other adults and children were able to escape to safety.

"Apparently this fire raced through this home with the add-ons (and) it got into places where they didn't suspect it would get into and it just got out of hand to the point where they could not control it and they evacuated the house."

The fire started about 9:45 p.m. and obliterated the second floor of the two-story home, which firefighters said was a total loss.

The 10-year-old has been remanded to fire safety classes with the city, Nunez said.

The Red Cross was helping the family find a place to live.
