WTVM 4/23/13 Editorial: April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Posted: Updated:
(WTVM) -

April is Alcohol Awareness Month and the focus of many activists and officials across Georgia and Alabama is not adults, but teens.

Research shows 23 percent of Georgia youth have consumed alcohol before the age of 13… nearly the same percentage of high school students also admit to binge drinking.

A third of alcohol-related traffic fatalities involving teens each year, occur during prom and graduation seasons, which began this month and go through June.

Many schools and community groups conduct anti-drinking and anti-drug campaigns in the spring but experts say the number one deterrent to underage drinking is having parents talk to their teens and pre-teens about the dangers.

Alcohol is the number one drug of choice among the nation's youth and it can have serious, often lifelong, consequences.

Here are a few sobering stats:

  • 3 million children ages 14 through 17 are regular drinkers who already have a confirmed alcohol problem.
  • 24 percent of eighth graders say they have consumed alcohol in the last 30 days.
  • More than 100,000 12-13 year-olds binge drink every month.
  • Alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes of death and injury among teenagers.
